I opened the email, and it said "Congratulations!" That made me feel funny at first. And then I went crazy with joy! We had good support through The American Dream. That was the main thing for us as self-employed people: you don't have much time to take care of things on the side. It lifted a burden from us.

I didn't even know that my husband Sascha had played in the Green Card Lottery. For him, it was always clear that we were going to immigrate to the USA. I was self-employed in Germany, we had built a good life for ourselves, and were in the process of moving into a new terraced corner house - in other words, really typical German.
